Back
in Black! A very long time ago, I made a promise to myself. I realized that if I continued as I was, I would never finish either my Tyranid army or my Dark Eldar army. I decided I would have to concentrate totally on one army to finish it, before I could finish the other. At the time, the Tyranid Codex was due out in a few months. I knew that I wouldn’t be able to resist playing with my Tyranids at that point, so I decided I would finish up my Dark Eldar Kabal and then put them aside once the Tyranid Codex came out. I would then play my Tyranids exclusively until I finished my swarm. It has taken me far longer than anticipated, but the time draws nigh. As I write this, I can see my last 3 unfinished models, needing only the second drybrush coat and a little bit of detail work. They should be finished by the end of tomorrow, allowing my Dark Eldar to come out and play once again. There will be a small tournament soon. Although it is to be held over 4 days, at four different stores, the point size of the tournament is small. That is just as well. Not only do I like small point games, but I do have some work ahead of me to prepare for it. The tournament is The Battle for Bray, a Chaos campaign involving the invasion of the planet Bray. Although details are scarce at the moment, I expect I’ll be placed on the Chaos side. (Evil does make for some strange bedfellows.) Essentially, each day will be a (possibly connected) series of short games, with the results from one day making adjustments to the fighting on the next day. I'm not sure yet whether the overall results will help people (Chaos won big yesterday, so the Chaos side gets a larger force today) or if it is more direct (you did very well in your battle yesterday, so you get to bring in one of your additional detachments today.) The tournament requires a 1000pt main army and two 100pt additional detachments. There is no indication as to whether or not there will be any other points aside from battle points, such as painting scores or composition scores or other things. There is work to be done, however. The tournament requires that all models have 3 colors, be based and flocked. I may have to add a color here and there, mostly to my Raiders, I think, but the flocking is what I’ll need to do. I’ve never really liked the idea of flocking the bases of my models, since it really only looks good if it matches the terrain they are fighting on. If a model is flocked with green grass and such, it looks totally out of place fighting in a desert. On the other hand, if the model has a plain base, I find it easier to ‘see’ it on whatever terrain it is fighting on. Ah well, I suppose I’ll have to get over it and just get it done. I don’t like the standard green grass, however. It’s very plain and ordinary and everybody does it. I like the idea of having science fiction figures fighting in science fiction places, stuff more interesting than just the standard green fields. I have been thinking about making their flocking based on a volcanic plain. I was initially thinking black sand, but that would still look pretty plain. On the other hand, black aquarium gravel might be just the thing to make it stand out. I could use primarily black sand, but scatter some larger rocks here and there to make it more interesting. I wouldn’t want to make it too rocky, however, that would probably just end up looking cluttered. As to the army composition itself, I have a few ideas. My Dark Eldar are all about mobility, being able to swiftly concentrate where need be, or scatter like leaves before a storm, leaving the enemy to strike at the air. I also feel that the backbone of the Dark Eldar, perhaps more than other armies, is their Warriors. Given that I'm likely to face a lot of marine-type lists, I will need something to handle lots of armored troops. In addition, between vehicle-based marines and the possibility of Imperial Guard (among others) I will need something to handle vehicles. Although I doubt that I’ll be going against many horde type armies (Imperial Guard, Guardian heavy Eldar, Tyranids, Orks) I will still want a few things to take on light infantry. Given that, here is my planned list for the tournament: Kabal
Rillishelwe Mor (The Shimmering Song of Death) Dracon El T’taes: Agonizer, pistol, Combat Drugs, Shadowfield. (rides with a squad) Squad Mal’Agasi: Raider w/Dark Lance, Sybarite Mal’Agasi w/Agonizer and pistol Splinter Cannon, Blaster, 3xSplinter Rifle Squad Il Wa’Kut: Raider w/Dark Lance, Sybarite Il Wa’Kut w/Agonizer and pistol Splinter Cannon, Blaster, 3xSplinter Rifle Squad Ev Bellue: Raider w/Dark Lance, Sybarite Ev Bellue w/Agonizer and pistol Splinter Cannon, Blaster, 3xSplinter Rifle Squad Ec’Naifed: Raider w/Disintegrator, Sybarite Ec’Naifed w/Agonizer and pistol Splinter Cannon, Blaster, 7xSplinter Rifle Squad Euvelleb: Raider w/Disintegrator, Sybarite Euvelleb w/Agonizer and pistol Splinter Cannon, Blaster, 7xSplinter Rifle Talos Shemas Buanna (Mourning Reaper) (this is a Wraithlord converted to a Talos) 1000pts Additional
Detachments
Talos Murekhalir (Deathbringer) (Standard Talos) Squad Marg Isturrith (Whispering Death) 8xSplinter Rifle, 2xDark Lance The Dark Lances and Blasters give me excellent anti-vehicle firepower. Those same weapons plus the Disintegrators and all the Agonizers make for excellent anti-armored troops options, both at range and in close. 5 Splinter Cannons plus 23-31 splinter rifles should also give me good protection against hordes. The Talos (or both, as the case may be) will also be effective against armored troops and light infantry, and may also distract my opponents from my Raider squads. So, there you have it, I'm back in the saddle again, with a strikeforce from Kabal Rillishelwe Mor. If you enjoyed this, email me and let me know |
